Many of the soundtracks to popular films have achieved popularity in their own right, selling millions of albums, spawning Top 40 singles, and winning critical acclaim. A soundtrack serves three purposes: to capture the moods of individual scenes, to give continuity to the film, and to establish time period and location. Television's musical accompaniment, by contrast, usually consists of brief, catchy jingles, which encapsulate the overall feeling of the show, such as Danny Elfman's zany instrumental theme to "The Simpson's."
