Winston's "rural folk piano" excursions made him one of the earliest (1982) icons of Contemporary Instrumental/New Age. Winston's musical influences include Floyd Cramer, the Ventures, Booker T. & the MGs, Fats Waller and Professor Longhair. Winston's "Autumn" (1984) was the album that turned the Windham Hill label from a curiosity into a phenomenon. In addition to his signature solo piano, Winston also performs on guitar in the Hawaiian "slack key" style. Winston's earliest inspirations included the seasons and the brief instrumentals that precede the hourly radio news.
