This afternoon, Black Eyed Peas mastermind Will.i.am stopped by the RS offices with his iPod Nano to preview some of the hot cuts from his September release, Songs About Girls. Will says there’s a narrative flow to the record: Boy meets girl. Boy gets girl. Boy goes to strip club. Boy gets caught cheating. Girl leaves. Boy and girl somehow get back together. The cut “Donkey,” is a ridiculous club joint featuring Snoop Dogg; we’ll let you figure where that one fits in the timeline.
But wait, there’s more. In the next few weeks Will is headed to Brazil. Instead of blowing his wad on a big-budget video, he plans to shoot a movie in a local favela (a shantytown) that will coincide with the themes on the record. He’ll star in the movie as a character called Willie, a club DJ who aspires to be a big-time producer. And Willie will have a soundtrack of his own, which features harder hip-hop beats, harder lyrics and a harder edge – Nas guests on that puppy. “I got two records done,” Will says, adding that if you purchase Songs About Girls, you’ll get the whole multimedia enchilada.
