Unlike so many R&B vocalists, Akon doesn't dwell on the usual overblown hyper-romantic balladry; instead he sings about the grim realities of inner-city strife and penitentiary blues. Backed by production that balances headbanging ruggedness and club-friendly sheen, he comes especially strong on "Gangsta" and the hit single "Locked Up."
